Operate a Station

Station operators form the backbone of the WeatherXM Network. By installing, powering, and maintaining physical weather stations across residential, agricultural, maritime, and commercial locations, operators contribute essential ground-truth environmental observations to the decentralized network.


Getting Started

Participating as a station operator involves four straightforward steps:

1. Acquire an Approved Weather Station

Network participation requires hardware certified by the WeatherXM Network Association. Approved models currently include the WeatherXM D1 (Wi-Fi), H2 (LoRaWAN), Pulse (Cellular LTE-M / NB-IoT), and D2 Mesh (Sub-GHz local mesh).

2. Physical Siting & Installation

Accurate meteorological observations depend heavily on proper physical placement:

  • Clear Sky & Sun: Mount the station in direct sunlight to ensure accurate solar radiation sensing and continuous solar panel charging.
  • Unobstructed Airflow: Position the station above surrounding rooflines, trees, or fences (ideally 1.5–2 meters above ground or roof peak) to capture clean wind speed and direction data.
  • Distance from Artificial Heat: Keep sensors away from chimneys, air conditioning exhausts, asphalt roofs, and dark heat-absorbing surfaces.

3. Connect & Pair

Pair your station using the WeatherXM mobile app (iOS / Android) to link your hardware to your account and designate your reward payout wallet.

4. Continuous Ground-Truth Contribution

Once connected, your station streams regular telemetry into the network validation pipeline. Observations meeting the network's quality standards automatically qualify for daily rewards.


Qualifying Contributions & Quality of Data (QoD)

Rewards are not distributed for mere connectivity; they incentivize verified, high-quality meteorological contributions. The Network evaluates incoming observations across several objective dimensions:

  • Sensor Plausibility: Observations must fall within physically possible environmental ranges and pass cross-sensor consistency checks.
  • Temporal Consistency: Continuous, uninterrupted reporting without anomalous sudden jumps or missing packets.
  • Spatial Correlation: Comparison against adjacent stations, reference weather networks, and reanalysis models to detect sensor drift or indoor siting.
  • Location Integrity: Verification that the physical hardware operates at its declared deployment coordinates.

Operational Boundary & Terms of Use

Network Participation & Data Contribution

Network participation is optional. Station operators can use compatible stations (such as the WeatherXM D2 Mesh) in local-only, direct, or private mesh mode without connecting to the WeatherXM cloud or participating in Network rewards.

When cloud connectivity is configured and network rewards are enabled, observations are contributed to the Network Dataset in accordance with the published Terms of Use (PDF) and Privacy Policy (PDF).
