Commercial Licensing
The WeatherXM Network Dataset represents high-density, real-time and historical surface weather observations collected globally. To support the sustainable economics of the physical network, commercial rights to this dataset are licensed transparently through the WeatherXM Network Association.

Commercial rights to the Network Dataset are currently held by the following organizations:

Licensing Framework & Annual Auctions
Commercial use of the full Network Dataset requires an active commercial license granted by the WeatherXM Network Association.
Key Licensing Principles:
- Annual Competitive Auctions: Licenses are awarded through structured, transparent annual auctions conducted by the Association's General Assembly.
- Treasury Funding: All proceeds and licensing fees collected from commercial auctions flow directly into the Association Treasury. These funds support protocol development, station reward distribution, and ecosystem expansion.
- Multi-Licensee Model: The network does not grant permanent exclusive rights to any single corporate entity, ensuring long-term competitive dynamics and market diversity.
Scope of Commercial Rights
A commercial dataset license authorizes:
- Direct redistribution and sub-licensing of real-time and historical observation streams.
- Integration into proprietary forecasting engines, numerical weather prediction (NWP) pipelines, and machine learning models.
- Commercial indexing, enterprise API provisioning, and derivative weather index products for energy trading, commodities, and insurance underwriting.
Non-Commercial & Academic Exemptions
Organizations and individuals do not require a commercial license for:
- Academic, scientific, or climate research publications.
- Non-commercial personal viewing via the official WeatherXM Explorer or mobile apps.
- Open-source protocol auditing and cryptographic verification of published IPFS archives.
