The WeatherXM Network Association maintains an open certification program for third-party hardware manufacturers. The goal is to cultivate a decentralized, multi-vendor ecosystem providing stations across diverse price points, connectivity environments, and industrial durability requirements.
Technical Specifications Overview
Certified WeatherXM stations must meet strict meteorological accuracy, data integrity, and communication requirements as defined in the official specification:
1. Mandatory Sensor Capabilities
All certified stations must measure the core surface meteorological variables:
- Ambient Temperature: Range -40°C to +65°C; accuracy ±0.3°C.
- Relative Humidity: Range 0% to 100%; accuracy ±3% RH.
- Barometric Atmospheric Pressure: Range 300 to 1100 hPa; accuracy ±1 hPa.
- Wind Speed & Direction: Range 0 to 50 m/s (180 km/h); accuracy ±0.5 m/s or ±5%.
- Precipitation / Rain Gauge: Resolution 0.1 mm or better; self-emptying tipping bucket or solid-state acoustic/optical sensing.
- Solar Irradiance & UV Index: Global solar radiation up to 1400 W/m² and UV index 0 to 15.
2. Device Identity & Cryptographic Attestation
To prevent spoofing and data falsification:
- Each hardware device must include a secure element (or secure microcontroller enclave) holding a unique, tamper-proof private key provisioned during manufacturing.
- Data packets transmitted to the network must carry cryptographic signatures generated at the edge by the hardware device.
3. Environmental Durability & Autonomy
- Outdoor components must achieve an IPX5 rating (or higher) with UV-stabilized polycarbonate housing.
- Stations must be engineered for autonomous energy operation using high-efficiency solar harvesting with lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) or supercapacitor backup.
Certification & Onboarding Process
- Specification Review: Manufacturer reviews the Hardware Specifications PDF and submits a formal Expression of Interest.
- Prototype Evaluation: Manufacturer ships production-ready sample prototypes to the Association's testing lab for environmental chamber validation and sensor calibration benchmarks.
- Firmware & Key Provisioning Audit: The Association inspects edge firmware, cryptographic signing pipelines, and provisioning security.
- Onboarding Fee Payment: The manufacturer pays the mandatory $100 USD onboarding fee per device batch to the Association Treasury.
- Registry Inclusion: Certified device public keys and model identifiers are entered into the network's on-chain device registry.

- WeatherXM AG — D2 Mesh, Pulse LTE, H2 LoRaWAN, D1 Wi-Fi.
- EXM PC — Commercial and early network hardware designs.
